New Airtel Introduces 4G Services in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Connects Territory to Digital Superhighway
Bharti Airtel, the Sunil Mittal led telecom operator has become the first of the many telecom companies to start deploying 4G services in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. With this launch, the company has connected the island with the digital superhighway. It is worth noting that before this, Andaman and Nicobar residents were limited to using slow internet services which did not facilitate lightning fast internet which the rest of the country was enjoying. But, with this new launch of 4G services by Airtel, the residents of the archipelago will be able to enjoy digital services like HD video streaming, superfast downloads and uploads and much more.
Secy Says Connectivity of Islands is Major Breakthrough
Interestingly, the 4G services were formally launched on the island by the Hon’ble Member of Parliament Sh. Bishnu Pada Ray and Smt. Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary, Department of Telecom, Govt. of India via a 4G video call. During the launch, Telecom Secretary, Aruna Sundararajan said that the connectivity of Andaman and Nicobar islands is another significant milestone towards fulfilling the vision of digitally connected India. The secy added to her words saying, “I congratulate the team at Airtel for taking the lead in rolling out these services in such remote locations and bringing the benefits of mobile broadband to citizens. We ensure the industry of continued support in their efforts to provide broadband access to every Indian.”
Free 4G SIM Available for Airtel Subscribers in Andaman and Nicobar
It is worth noting that in the initial days, the 4G services of Airtel will only be available in Port Blair and then will gradually expand into other areas of the island. Subscribers of Airtel will be able to exchange their existing SIM for a 4G enabled SIM free of cost. These subscribers will be able to recharge their numbers with prepaid plans or opt for postpaid plans which come bundled with content from Netflix, Amazon, and Zee5. The Airtel 4G network will be available to the consumers for use on dongles and hotspots also.
Speaking about the launch, Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India and South Asia) of Bharti Airtel said, “We are delighted to launch the first 4G service in Andaman and Nicobar and contribute towards building a truly digitally empowered India. Having given the islands its first mobile network in 2005, we now look forward to serving customers with world-class high-speed data services and invite them to experience our 4G network. We would also like to thank the DoT and the local administration for their continued support to our endeavour.”
It is also worth noting that Airtel was the first service provider in Andaman and Nicobar islands when it launched the services back in 2005.
